DRM offers a high quality digital replacement for current analogue radio broadcasting in the AM and FM/VHF bands, and as such it can be operated with the same channelling and spectrum allocations as currently employed. ‘DRM 30’ modes are designed to utilise the AM broadcast bands below 30MHz and ‘DRM+’ modes utilize the spectrum from 30MHz to VHF Band III, centred on the FM broadcast band II.

The British Government thereafter constituted the Indian State Broadcasting Service in the Indian sub-continent, which took the name All India Radio (AIR) in 1936 with clear objectives to inform, educate and entertain the masses. At the time of Independence in 1947, AIR had a network of six stations only. External Services Division of AIR alone broadcasts in 27 languages: 16 foreign and 11 national languages.
