OUR PARTNERS

All India Radio (AIR)

Broadcasting in India started with private initiative by Radio Clubs in1923. An attempt was also made in 1927 to start a private broadcasting company which as a commercial venture failed. The British Government thereafter constituted the Indian State Broadcasting Service in the Indian sub-continent, which took the name All India Radio (AIR) in 1936 with clear objectives to inform, educate and entertain the masses.

At the time of Independence in 1947, AIR had a network of six stations only. As on date, All India Radio has 234 Radio Stations with 149 medium frequency (MW), 54 high frequency (SW) and 171 FM transmitters in its Home Service with 374 Transmitters to carry the programmes for both the Home and External Services. The Home Service itself covers an area of 91.79% of the country and 99.14% of the people in 24 major languages and 146 dialects. External Services Division of AIR alone broadcasts in 27 languages: 16 foreign and 11 national languages. All India Radio broadcasts 620 news bulletins daily in different languages and dialects through its News Services Division.

All India Radio under the umbrella of Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) is the biggest public service broadcasting organization and the largest radio-broadcasting networks in the world.
